P.O.W.E.R. Member and Louisiana State Representative, Aimee Adatto Freeman announces donation drive to celebrate the “Pink Tax” exemption as law.
Dear Friends and Constituents,
After years working to pass legislation to end unfair, unconstitutional taxes on feminine hygiene products and diapers, we finally did it in 2021. And now, the “pink tax” exemption has become effective state law on July 1, 2022!
We’re marking this momentous occasion with a Donation drive in partnership with the Junior League of New Orleans, where I am a sustaining member.
Throughout the month, we’ll be collecting donations of feminine hygiene products and diapers at the Junior League of New Orleans from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM on Monday through Friday (except for July 4th).
As I said while fighting to pass this new law, these products are not luxuries – they are necessities. Not only is a pink tax unconstitutional because it treats individuals differently based solely on their sex, but it also unfairly burdens women and families living in poverty.
In one of the poorest states in the nation, where more than one-quarter of our children live in poverty, we have a moral imperative to make these necessities more accessible. This is especially significant now with supply shortages and inflated costs of these essential products.
I’m proud that this law will now save Louisianans money while improving health and wellbeing.
If you’re curious about the “pink tax” and how we passed the exemption into law, check out this short video featured by the U.S. Conference on Poverty and Basic Needs.
So many people were instrumental in making this possible, and I’m forever grateful. I hope you’ll continue to show your support with donations of feminine hygiene products and diapers this month.
Please continue to reach out to our office with questions and concerns.
Best Regards,
Aimee
